Lore With New Lipstick

I rediscovered an old piece of mine this morning. It’s a collection of micro-fiction I wrote about six years ago.
I (naturally) felt like it needed a new cover, so to celebrate its rediscovery and my adding new lipstick to it I thought I’d hand it out. (Click the cover to download a copy).

Midsummer in Autumn

My husband is directing A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Centrestage in Spring Hill. It’s going to a hilarious and minimal production of the much loved show.

But husband or no I still had to sell him on my poster ideas. I’m on a giant minimalism trip at the moment so the first concept was very vacant.
…we ended up going with a little more illustration.

Shem in Lines&Light

Here’s one of the best from our TiNA exhibition Lines&Light. The model is Shem Allen (of Skinny Jean) with his exceptional 1920s-esque quiff. The story is based on the notion that everyone is born with a set number of breaths and upon the exhaling of the last *BAM* fate will end you. Originally I’d thought of having Shem’s newborn son, Django in the shot with him – I loved the idea of time ticking down through the hourglass next to a new life. A finite number of breaths, I decided however, was perhaps a little too morbid and inappropriate for the little Django.
The photo (and all in the collection) is by the attractive Todd Hunter McGaw (his wife’s hot too – they’re one of those hot couples).

I head down to Newcastle for the excitement that is This Is Not Art tomorrow.

Here’s a little blurb about what I’m showing:

“Over the years Pete has acquired many little narrative odds and ends; concepts and lore that he has found exciting, challenging or true. This exhibition is a collection of some of those little pieces that he never found anywhere else to put. Presented once as a staged photo (by Todd) and again as an illustration, the pairs reveal these little ideas As Seen In Lines & Light.”

I was fortunate enough to recruit the talents of local photographer Todd Hunter McGaw and illustrator Natalie Perkins (for the beautiful frames) to create this exhibition. 2 x 8 pieces. The concept is similar to Chris Perren’s on his band’s debut album Mimicry of Lines and Light (iTunes link) and as such the exhibition is called As Seen in Lines & Light. It’s got a nice symmetry to it I think :) – one audible, one visual but both about the natural and the digital. This is why we work so well together – our heads work the same way.

So if you find yourself at TiNA be sure to stop by and say hi. It’s promising to be an ENORMOUS weekend.

This is Learn From Fiction. The book he’s holding is actually The Juniper Tree, a collection of the brothers Grimm. This one is a reminder to hold fiction close; to learn from it. As usual expect to see more soon.

Übermensch

We (IV Motion) recently polished off VFX and motion design for the QPIX short Übermensch. Adapted from a short story of the same name it plays like a What If, with a “super-man” growing up in Nazi Germany. Powerful stuff. It’ll be starting the festival run soon.

Lazarus; Coasters & Posters

I recently finished the new poster for the upcoming theatre show Lazarus Won’t Get Out of Bed. It’s a wonderful show of pop culture as mythology. Very exciting. As you can see below there’s also a (slightly sadder) Lazarus coaster. The poster is after the jump.
It’ll be at !Metro Arts 13 – 31 October. With an exceptional creative team behind it, it’s highly recommended. I’ll see you opening night?

Downside

Downside Up is dark/Burtonesque/fairy tale/cabaret/musical/puppet show written by Emma Dean and Jacob Diefenbach that will be hitting intensive pre-production around the end of this year.
I’m on the pre-visualisation team and here’s the first peak -

I recommend checking out the songs on the myspace. It’s a trez exciting project.

Broken Hearts For Theatre

I was recently asked to create a foyer piece for a collection of one act plays. Upon learning that all the plays were quite downers I thought I’d better make something that was a little more somber than my usual stuff. I had great fun with the mythological imagery, Artemis and the little frame. I really enjoy drawing something when I have something to say. …of course I’m also good at coming across preachy and pretentious. eek. It’s called Disconnected Means Broken and it references a lot of BC Artemis worship and how similar practices today can lead to a more literal kind of broken heart. (I said pretentious and preachy didn’t I?)
